Unit 3. Challenge the Process

In this unit, I learned how to create change through preexisting organizations and institutions. "Challenging the Process" is about inspiring others to search for opportunities to innovate, change and grow.  Leaders have to look inward and think about how they can improve and change the institutions they are apart of.

Task Force and Board Presentation
During this unit, we had the opportunity to present to Peak to Peak's Board. Earlier that month, our leadership class took on a data collection project to ensure every student's voice was being heard in relation to the build out that will be occurring next year.  We created surveys to send out to students, and presenting the information we collected to Peak to Peak's staff.

In February, our class visited the Confluence Small Business Collective in Lafayette, Colorado. Confluence is a coworking space that provides a community hub for people who work remotely. Confluence is also passionate about sustainability, and is a Gold-certified Lafayette Green Business that works with Boulder County partners for a Clean Environment (PACE). Confluence taught us about their unique business model and shared the importance of connecting with others.

During this unit, we also created our initial plan for our Change Projects. I worked with Peak to Peak's National Art Honor Society to plan a painted mural for one of the walls in the high school. Part 1 of my change project contains research about the mural painting process, consultations with students and staff, and initial mural designs.

Unit 4. Enable Others to Act
During this unit, I continued my mentor meetings with Rachel Hirt, the fundraising manager for Peak to Peak. In this meeting, we discussed my Change Project and I received advice on how to  move forward with my mural. I also assisted Ms. Hirt in creating a poster to advertise a kindergarten-12th grade event happening on campus.
In April, we were given the opportunity to visit Medtronic Surgical Innovations, a medical technology company that develops, manufactures, distributes, and sells medical therapies and devices. Leaders from Medtronic held a panel where they discussed their personal leadership styles, and what makes their company so successful. We were also given a tour of their Lafayette location, and we were able to see the ways they make their mission and vision visible in the space.

In the second semester, we continued our guest speaker presentation series. One of our guest speakers was Anna Doka, a Senior Communications Specialist at UBS, an investment banking company. Doka is an expert on "building your personal brand", and gave us advice on how to represent ourselves in the digital world.
